Water Main Flushing Program Green Bay, Wisconsin

Welcome to our Frequently Asked Questions on Green Bay Water’s flushing program. This information is designed to help you better understand our flushing program.

What is flushing?
Flushing water mains is a crucial aspect of maintaining the quality of the water supply in any community. Over time, sediment and mineral deposits can accumulate in water mains, reducing the flow of water and even affecting its taste and color. Flushing helps to remove these deposits, ensuring that the water supply remains clean and fresh. Flushing involves opening fire hydrants and allowing high-velocity water to flow through the water mains, scouring and flushing out any sediment or mineral buildup that has accumulated over time. To ensure safe and efficient water delivery to your area, we start the process by directing flow to a larger water main as it enters your neighborhood. From there, we open one or more hydrants within the section to maintain proper pressure and ensure the highest quality water. As the water flows through the hydrant, it creates a high-velocity flow through the water main, dislodging any deposits that may have built up on the walls of the pipe. The water, along with the dislodged material, is then flushed out through the open hydrant and sent to the city's stormwater system.

Why do we need a flushing program?
Green Bay Water believes flushing is a necessary investment in the long-term health and safety of the community. By preventing build-up in the water mains, we can avoid costly repairs and infrastructure upgrades down the line. Additionally, flushing helps to reduce the risk of waterborne illnesses by removing particles that reduce the effectiveness of our disinfection. Ultimately, flushing water mains is a proactive measure that ensures the continued delivery of safe, high-quality water to all customers. While it may require some upfront investment, the benefits of a well-maintained water supply are invaluable and far outweigh any costs in the long run.

How will I know when flushing will occur in my neighborhood?
Our crews place notification signs on commonly traveled streets each morning in the vicinity of where flushing will take place that day. If you see these signs in your neighborhood, please check our website for updates as we may be nearing your location soon. Although we cannot determine an exact date/time we will be by your location, we recommend regularly checking our website for updates regarding the process of our flushing program.

I am a water-sensitive customer. How can I make sure my service in uninterrupted?
We understand that some customers are water-sensitive for various reasons, such as medical concerns or businesses. While we strive to provide continuous service to our customers, there may be brief durations of low water pressure for customers adjacent to where we perform flushing. If you have concerns about maintaining continuous water service, please contact us at 920-448-3480, and we will coordinate with you to keep any interruptions to a minimum.

What should I expect when flushing is happening in my neighborhood?
Flushing will have a minimal impact on most of our customers. Customers near where flushing occurs may experience a temporary drop in water pressure. If this does happen, please be aware that our staff is diligently working to minimize any inconvenience caused to you by our flushing process. Flushing typically occurs Monday through Thursday between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m.

How long does it take to flush each water main?
The time taken to flush each water main is dependent on various factors such as the age of the water main, type of pipe, length/diameter of the water main being flushed, and if any sediment buildup is present. Our experience has ranged from 10 minutes to an hour or possibly longer, with the average flush taking approximately 23 minutes. The time is ultimately determined by the clarity of the water being flushed. Test samples are collected from the water as it exits the hydrant, and the process is complete once the turbidity (clarity) of the water reaches or is below the targeted level.

Can I use my water when flushing is taking place?
Yes, you can use the water while we are flushing on your street. However, please be aware that our flushing process may stir up rust particles and sediment that may have accumulated over time in the water main. You may notice discolored water when you use water while we are flushing.

Does flushing waste water?
Flushing does not waste water. It improves our water quality. Our water source is Lake Michigan, and the water used during our flushing program drains into the City’s stormwater system, then drains into the Fox River or a different tributary leading to the Bay of Green Bay and eventually back to Lake Michigan.

How will the water being used be paid for?
Funds from Green Bay Water rates pay for this program, just like any other maintenance program we have. Water rates will not be increased to pay for flushing. Each residence and business is individually metered to determine each customer’s usage, and your Utility bill is based on your specific meter readings.
